The building · Since 1991

On an island laid out to look European, this building was designed to look like Cairo.

It opened in 1991 in the neo-Mamluk tradition, with pointed arches and carved lattice screens. For twenty-four years it was where people who had just arrived in Cairo spent their first night: students from dozens of countries, faculty and visiting scholars. It reopened in 2019 as ICONIA Zamalek, and it still does the same job.

ICONIA Zamalek is a residential building of 60 serviced apartments on a quiet street in Zamalek, the island neighbourhood in the Nile at the centre of Cairo.

Each apartment is laid out for living rather than overnighting: a kitchen or kitchenette, room to work, and a separate living area in the larger suites. Guests stay for a few nights or for several months.

The building has an outdoor pool, a roof terrace looking across the island, and a reception desk staffed from 08:00 to 03:00 every day. It is a serviced apartment building, not a hotel — there is no breakfast buffet, and housekeeping follows a serviced-apartment schedule.

2.1 Stone, marble, wood

Arched openings at street level, a pale façade, and a lobby of marble floors, timber panelling and brass-toned screens.

The shared spaces are calm and evenly lit. From the lobby, corridors lead to the apartments; on the roof, a terrace with loungers and planting looks out over Zamalek’s trees and towers.
